What the experts say about truly eating healthy-review
Although many people, like Michigan State University students, think that turning to specific foods to eat healthy may be the best course of action, the experts say the real key is balance and variety. Gina Keilen, a registered dietitian and culinary coordinator for Culinary Services at MSU, said that when someone is looking for nutritional foods to eat, it is very important to look for variety. “Look for variety, not only in the types of foods you are eating, but also in the colors on your plate,” said Keilen. Not only is variety important, but also Karen Smith, a nutritionist, said that it is very important to make all foods fit into your diet. “Rules such as 'eat this, don't eat that' and 'eat only this amount' are external cues rather than internal cues, and following external cues can lead to disordered eating,” said Smith. “The key is eating out occasionally, eating when physically hungry (most of the time), keeping balance and variety in mind, choosing what sounds good to you, eating it mindfully and stopping eating when satisfied (most often) -- and also engaging in enjoyable physical activity on a regular basis,” said Smith.
